It was about renouncing unnecessary things. They gave it up later because it proved to be too difficult for the new comers.(ppl usually don't like resisiting their nafs. especially when it comes to stuff like telly n eating junk food..) As for fun... Some ppl might consider working for the sake of Allah and bringing the ppl back to the deen as...well, fun. The real rewards await for us in Jannah (and it's a lot more fun there than it is here), The ppl in TJ who r uptight, not "fun" and have no mercy towards the others r the ppl who never got what TJ was about.
